Howdy!

Welcome to [Geek Notes]...my online home away from home. I'm the girl behind the scenes and this is where my geek side comes out in multiple ways. This particular blog has been around on more than one domain since 2005, although I've been blogging somewhere in the internetwebosphere since February 2001.

To make a long story short, in case you're lazy at times like I am, I'm a late 20-something year old lass who's a proud Texan. I work for the government during the week and for myself as a part-time photog when I'm not at the day job. I dabble in a variety of interests, including an obsession for furthering my education and postcard collecting. Want to know more? Click the link in the previous paragraph :)

If you know me in real life, I ask that you respectfully refrain from using my real name here as I have this thing about privacy on the web, especially considering the particular field that I work in. I'd prefer the individuals that I work with during normal business hours not find me anywhere outside my office! My photog clients are more than welcome here, however!

Randomness

– Back from vacation — still posting images over here from The Roadtrip. Please pop over and comment on the posts — for every 25 comments left on the blog or the RSS feeds posting to my personal Facebook account (you can leave up to one per post!), I am donating $25 to pre-designated charity. I’ve had a LOT of hits, and several emails and verbal comments, but the emails and verbal comments don’t count towards the Comments for Charity promo — only those left on the blog or Facebook RSS feeds. Right now, the posts — from the evening of June 12 (titled ‘wheat … and more wheat’) through The Bus Tour – Part 2 have a combined total of less than 30 comments (there are a number of comments at Facebook I need to log in and count up). In comparison, the website visits/hits are about 4-5 times that in that same time period. Add in that I’ve emailed in early June (before I left) and on June 30th to almost everyone in my personal and business address books to stop by and leave a comment, all it would take is each one of them leaving a single comment to hit the 150 comment goal — emails aren’t published if that’s the worry! I’m truly saddened that people will take the time to allow the entries to load, but not take an extra minute or less to leave a comment that will benefit several charities as well as a random commentor who’ll receive an 11×14 mounted print for a minute of their time. I posted the deadline as July 3rd, but seeing as I’m behind on posting the trip images, I’m planning to extended it another week.

So … please stop by — as this site gets a number of hits as well — and help me help these charities I am passionate about (the money is coming directly out of my day job paycheck every other week (when I’m paid) until I reach the comment total – more than I typically donate at a time to these charities (normally I donate a lesser amount on a periodic basis throughout the year). And those of you who already have, thank you — its very much appreciated.

– While on the roadtrip, I was able to cross off several items (or parts of) on my 101 in 1001 days list. As soon as all the images are online and I have time to write up a post about each one here, I’ll post it on both sites.

– Also, over at my business website, I’m holding a July special to raise money for the three year old son of one of my friend’s coworkers who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (they live in Denver). Even if you’re not in East Texas — but know someone who is that has been thinking about a portrait session, send them over to A Fundraiser for Cullen. And if you’re interested in helping, contact me with your info and I’ll pass it on to April (my friend who is spearheading the effort) and she’ll contact you with further details. Meanwhile, I’m sure both Cullen and his family would appreciate all the prayers and positive thoughts for a successful recovery that could be sent their way (comments can be left on their journal and guestbook located here).

– I also am posting twitter updates for the business here. I have a personal twitter account that is private; if you’re a friend of mine or a fellow photographer and aren’t following me, let me know and I’ll pass on the url.

– 5 foot 4 Productions, my commercial, travel, and fine art photography, has just undergone a website overhaul and a slight move (out from the sub-directory). As soon as I wrap up the trip edits, I will be launching a gallery of travel and fine art photography prints for purchase, as well as at least one postcard set (possibly two or three).

– My trip up north reaffirmed one of my addictions: huckleberry. So — if you come across the hard candies, gummy bears, pie filling, soap, lotion, and whatnot that can be easily shipped to the Lone Star State, I’ll give you my mailing address to route it to :) I’m sure we have something here I can trade; if not, want a fine art photographic print?

– I forgot what else I was gonna say. Problem with not being able to type as fast as I think. Do they have a program out yet that I can think it out what I want to write and it types it up? It was bad enough that the voice one couldn’t keep up with me when I gave it a trial run years ago … what good is technology if I can’t maximize it to the fullest, huh?

Okay, back to being productive — images to come at the biz blog soon.

vay – cay – shun

From this Friday (June 12th) until Sunday, June 28th, I’ll be traveling around the United States of America and a bit of Canada. Since I have two blogs and won’t have enough time to post to both every evening (when I have internet access), I’ll be posting as I’m able to on my business blog instead. Please jump over there for the interim (or longer!) and comment daily! For every 25 comments I receive, I’ll make a $25 donation to a pre-designated charity as well as two giveaways (via the business blog and via my business twitter account) — more information about both giveaways and the comments for charity will be posted on that blog tomorrow/Friday in the pre-dawn hours!

Btw, I have two things on the 101 in 1001 list I’ve knocked out recently and will be knocking out several more during my trip. Will post about them all in July!

Have a great rest of June!!

Dear Telemarketers

You know that whole Do Not Call registry? Pay attention to it for pete’s sake!

Just because I changed my business name and either the State of Texas or the county in which I filed the DBA in sold you my contact info (again) & new business name does NOT mean you now have a green light to harass me again. It took several months two years ago to stop your calls, I am not in the mood for it when I’m about to leave for a trip. You’ve all called me four times this morning afternoon. One of which was asking for my mother’s name. She has no affiliation with my business. Her name isn’t on anything tied to the business. Just mine and mine alone — especially as the word Photography is tacked on to my name for the biz name. And no, our names aren’t remotely similar other than sharing a last name, so there is no excuse or reason for it.

Cease and desist pronto.

Or I’ll sic karma monkeys on you … along with a few Irish curses.

Sincerely,
A seriously annoyed small business owner registered on the Do Not Call list who was trying to work at her day job when you all kept harassing her today.

PS to the non telemarketers: if you know my full name, tack on .com to it and you’ll find the newly launched website sometime this evening before I crash and burn from exhaustion. If not, and I know you, leave a comment and I’ll email you the url once its officially live!

Change is Good

… and time consuming …

… and expensive …

What am I referring to? Well … my photography business has undergone some major changes over the nearly two years I’ve officially been in business. When I started, I was overwhelmed and lacked the time to sit down, figure everything out, and do it both right and what fits me best in terms of style, work flow, and whatnot. And as my friends, coworkers, former coworkers, clients, and most importantly, family — I’m sharing the news with all of you before it hits the business blog and newsletter this weekend.

I now know after hours and days and weeks and months (you get the idea) of where I want to see the business grow into and expand over time. And in doing so, two major changes are about to take place.

(a) I’m stream lining the business into two primary photography ‘genres’ — lifestyle portraiture and commercial/travel/fine art. No more events or weddings. I’m sticking to the areas of photography that I love and enjoy the most.

(b) A name change is also in the works. If you know me IRL — take my first and last name, tack on Photography to the end — and that’ll be it. I know I was very hesitant to go that route in the beginning, especially with the field I work in during the week, but I’ve never really been in love with my business name, it was just the best idea that came about when I was brainstorming and asking for suggestions. The domain — just my first and last name — has already been purchased and has a splash page to my other two sites for the time being.

The first change is taking effect immediately. The second, hopefully by September. That one involves a bit of a financial outlay — as I’m making the change from sole proprietor to LLC, have to change up the name on the checking account, all my accounts with vendors and directories, designing a new logo, new marketing materials, spreading the word since I finally got my SEO rankings pretty high in terms of search results, transitioning the current site over on to a new domain (that’s already in progress), and several other things that I am failing to recall right now.

And now, back to editing sessions … have a great weekend!

Take Time …

Every once in a while, when we become overwhelmed, we should take time to step back and observe the world around us. Life passes by too quickly not to.

Those that know me know I typically spend springtime out photographing the glorious blooms around East Texas, whether in my own yard, along roadsides, or wherever I may happen across them. Beyond a quick getaway to Ellis County recently, I haven’t done so. Shame on me. So, last night (Thursday) I took a 15 minute break before the sun completely set and wandered around my yard to capture the early blooms of the season … this would be my favorite shot:

Take Time | East Texas Fine Art Photography

If you’ve had a portrait session with me, you know I have a tendency to contort myself or lay down on the ground to get the shot I have envisioned. Same thing with my ‘fun’ or artsy photography. One of my favorite shots I captured a couple springs ago resulted in me laying on the sidewalk in the middle of the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens while the other passers-by thought I was nuts. This time, however, I was hunched down as low as I could literally curl up into without sitting or laying down (Hannah, I’m certain, knows what I mean!).

I also captured a few ‘outtakes’ of the most loyal male in my life — my Rascal. He suffers from PDS aka Photographer’s Dog Syndrome. He doesn’t like me so much when that big black thing covers my face — nor does he really like my P&S either anymore. So I rarely capture a great portrait of him anymore :( Shame, he’s such a hansome fellow. I realize this isn’t as spectacular of an image of him as it could be, but I was shooting through a gate from 15 feet away at 75 mm.

Lastly, this lil guy joined me for the last five or so minutes, constantly winding his way through my legs to show me how much he loves me. He’s a part time resident of mi casa — apparantly someone dumped him out and he adopted us. Lately he’s also gotten into some battles with some foxes roaming nearby and I have to guess they roughhoused him a little too much based on the wound on the back of his head. That’s what I assume he was telling me all about while he kept me company as he didn’t stop meowing for a few minutes! Anyway, I finally asked him to hold still so I could get a portrait of his handsome self — and he did! This image is actually rotated 180 degrees — that’s my foot along the right edge. So … meet Yea Yea (dubbed such since his meow sounds like he is saying “Yeah, Yeah” …

Notice Me | East Texas Pet Photography

Day in the life …

Ever been so busy you feel like your barely staying afloat yet have someone comment …

“Oh, you don’t have kids/spouse/blah blah blah, so you’ve got plenty of time”

“But you get off work at … don’t you have time …”

“You do so much!”

“Do you think you could have this ready …”

“I can stop by to get it instead this evening …”

And all I want to do is let out a scream, blurt out “NO!!!”  and run for the hills.

No — thankfully (in some ways) I don’t have the children or spouse, otherwise, more would have to give than already has (again, to my penpals, I apologize. I swear I will respond. Just need to find some time to actually write or type a letter; although instead of spending a portion of a lunch hour writing this, I could have started a letter or finished the one that’s been in progress for awhile. Sorry Bea!). And in that case, it wouldn’t be the children or spouse. But when you’re already fighting the whole no energy issue health-wise, finding the time and energy to be faster, quicker, or just downright perky happy with a goofy smile on my face all the time is hard.

So … what is a day in my life like as of late? Here’s a basic rundown of during the week:

5:50 - 6:20 am: Slap snooze button until brain awakens enough to realize you’re down to the bare minimum time to get ready to leave for work on time. Stumble way across the hall to the bathroom.

6:20-6:40 am: Get ready. Yes, I can be ready to walk out the door in  20 minutes or less. With makeup (aka powder, eyeshadow, and lipstick). Get lunch food out of the fridge, take medicine, grad stuff, walk out back door.

6:40 – 7:30 am (approx): Drive to work. Sometimes, if hungry, eat on the way. Mutter at drivers less conscious than self. Squint because you drive eastward into the rising sun. Remember to slow down for the last two school zones since the flashing lights kick in as you’re getting to them.

7:30 am: Begin the work day at the day job. If didn’t eat while driving, eat while starting up the workday. Some days, take a half hour lunch instead of an hour so can leave early (or flex out to leave earlier another day of the week — nearly almost always business related at that).

12 pm: Lunch. Eat at desk. Bring laptop when bogged down with side biz stuff — editing, email catch up (using wi-fi signal can pick up), and what not. Or — on many occasions — take nap during lunch instead.

12:30 or 1 pm: back to work

4:30 pm - 5:15 pm (approx): Leave day job. Battle traffic. Squint because the glare is horrible (or late in the year, sun is setting in westward direction being driven). Thank lucky stars can shift workday a half hour earlier to avoid the really bad 5 pm traffic. Mutter at those who cut you off because they want to get to a side road a few hundred feet up to turn off. Mutter again because you no more got back up to the speed limit before they pulled that. Wince every time someone barely comes to a stop behind you at a light –so close you can’t see the grill or the front end of their vehicle – you kinda tend to do that after being rear-ended a couple times.

5:15 pm (ish) – 7 pm: Arrive home. Greet my fuzzy critters. Go through mail. Pull laptop out of bag, set back up on workstation. Kick off shoes, take off jewelry. Go see if any assistance is needed finishing up supper. Eat. Clean kitchen/feed fuzzy critters. Take bath/shower. (+ one night a week, sort laundry, start doing laundry).

7 pm to 10 pm (ish): Finally sit down to turn on laptop, figure out what on the mile long personal + side biz to-do lists to start on first. If no one is online, pay bills online (if need be), check email accounts, reply to biz emails or emails that only take a few minutes that aren’t biz related, quick skim through of twitter and/or facebook — if someone is online around 7 pm, this comes closer to 9 or 9:30 pm. Work on client images, process client orders, make headway on business ideas in the process of being implemented or revised, work on the two websites I’m in the process of revamping, think about the business accounting I started out the year keeping up with but now am behind on, think about the newsletter I need to find time to write, or draft blog entries until about 10 pm or later.

10 pm – whenever I cave (between 10:30 and 11 pm): Remember I have to work the next day, get clothes out to wear, put in bathroom. Fix lunch. Get to a stopping point, shut computer down, put in bag. Take stuff to the breakfast nook so I don’t forget something  the next morning as little to no caffeine is consumed before I walk out the back door. Brush teeth. Occasionally read for a few minutes. Turn off lamp, go to sleep. Remember something I need to do, turn lamp back on, find a post-it to scribble on, write reminder, turn lamp off, hopefully fall asleep this time.

Yes, I know I need to find a balance between the day job, side biz, and my ‘down time’. At least right now I only place orders on Wednesdays and Sundays; that helps some. 99% of client sessions are on Saturdays and Sundays. Occasionally I’ll do one on a weeknight when my schedule permits — otherwise weeknights are restricted to editing/business whatnot behind the scenes. Just gotta find a night or two I can ‘close shop’ and either veg out in front of the tv, catch up on letters, or run errands. Or — I can dream here — catch up on sleep.

back up and running!

I finally got this domain relocated to the new server over the weekend … and since I’m working on reorganizing the domain, the links that were in the bio section are temporarily missing … I’ll be incorporating that into the pages section of the blog as I have time — revamping 5 foot 4 Productions and the portfolio portion of ROLP (along with some secret stuff with the biz site) right now as well!

links …

I’m still working on transitioning the biz site, so this one hasn’t moved just yet …

In the meantime, a couple of interesting links:

Policies and Customer Service

Happy Easter!!

Migrating …

Along with my biz site that’s moving this week … this one will soon be moving as well. Just have to export some blog stuff off the blogs on this domain and it’ll be migrating as well … hopefully by next week, everything will be on the new server!

randomness …

… just some mid-week randomness, apologies if I lose anyone as I deivate further from wherever I start out at!

… powernaps. are. awesome. Have become an almost daily routine of late.

… which now means I use the alarm function on my cell phone more than I use the phone to talk.

… medicine the doc put me on has horrible side effects. Stopped taking it after a week (which was last week) because I couldn’t take the combo of nauseating headaches and the queesiness hitting at random or not knowing what would trigger one or both. It got so bad I fought the temptation to go home on two different days and caved on the third. At least I know now that the nauseating headaches the past couple of days are allergy related by the pollen forecast. Still need to call the doc back to find out if there’s a lower dosage or alternative to that Rx.

… same Rx also has led to a slight change in diet. Must lower sodium intake. Do you know how tough that is? Go look at every. single. “healthy.” frozen. meal. box. Or lunchmeat. Best alternative I’ve found have been the Steamfresh microwavable veggies — the plain white rice w/ veggies only has 15mg per serving. By cutting back at lunch, watching intake w/ beverages and breakfast, I can eat a ‘normal’ meal in the evenings.

… oh, and I’ve *lost* 3.5 lbs in the past two weeks. Have to assume its the salt because its the only actual change I’ve made to date.

… speaking of salt and lowering my consumption, I’ve had to cut back on one of my favorite beverages: orange gatorade. I. ♥. that. stuff.

… dad: if you’re cutting back on salt, you’re gonna have to give up the gatorade
me: but I love orange gatorade.
dad: it has too much salt.
me: so?
dad: switch to orange flavored water or koolaid
me: not. the. same. trust me.
dad: trust me, you don’t need the salt. find an alternative

… I haven’t found an alternative to the orange gatorade dilemma yet. Orange Sunkist and Sunny D just aren’t the same as much as I love them.

… speaking of loves, I have a new photography gadget in route that I snagged from a fellow photographer late last week. Had planned to wait until next January to snag one, but since its not being produced anymore, bargains are hard to find.

… while now on the photography tangent, I’m rotating sneak peeks on the biz blog from three sessions earlier this month through the end of next week. A fourth session is currently in the queue to have its own entry after I wrap up the editing on the first three.

… I’ll no more wrap all four of them up than I have at least three more next month (plus second shooting a wedding) to shoot and edit.

… Which means I have a dozen or so partially completed biz projects that are taking forever to finish.

… I also have to find a new webhost (for numerous reasons). Anyone absolutely love their’s — need unlimited add-on domains, unlimited mysql databases, linux server (no Windows servers!), little to no downtime, quick support response, and a whole lotta server space. Leaning towards Dreamhost or GoDaddy at the moment.

And with that, I probably stop now that you’re completely lost and don’t remember how I started off this entry …
